January 17th, 1995 – The 6.9 Mw Great Hanshin earthquake strikes, leaving 5,502–6,434 people dead, and 251,301–310,000 displaced in southern Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan.
January 19th, 1960 – The US–Japan Mutual Security Treaty is signed.
January 21st, 1968 – Vietnam War: The controversial Battle of Khe Sanh starts.
January 22nd, 1971 – The Singapore Declaration of the Commonwealth of Nations, is issued.
January 23rd, 1973 – Vietnam War: Richard Nixon announces that a peace accord has been reached in Vietnam.
