Marines of 2nd Battalion, 1st Regiment, 1st Marine Division are taking a break from the hot sun underneath a tarp before heading out on a sweep of Go Noi Island. The sweep of the island - part in Operation Pipestone Canyon, aimed at clearing Communists off their haven 10 miles south of Da Nang and five miles inland from Hoi An - is conducted together with ARVN and Korean Marines. The troops are concentrating on destroying enemy fortifications, bunkers, tunnels and supply areas to make the island useless to the Communists. The island is fertile and was once heavily populated, but is now a free fire zone.
