Lab technicians inject toxin into eggs in Seoul, 1958

Seoul, South Korea, December 1958: Two lab technicians inject the typhus toxin into eggs at the National Vaccine Laboratory in Seoul, South Korea. Controlled by the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Health it is staffed by 103 personnel — 53 technicians and 50 laborers and run by director Yong Seung Lee. Among the many vaccines produced are those for smallpox, cholera, typhoid, typhus, rabies and one not produced in the United States, Japanese Type B encephalitis.
