The Field Exercise Northwind, 1958

PFC Alfred W. Wood, left, and PFC Elis A. Tatum clean their weapons while waiting for their field assignments. Private First Class Alfred W. Wood, left, cleans his side arm pistol and Private First Class Elis A. Tatum his Browning 1919 machine gun during the field exercise Northwind. The 7th Military Police Company (Prov.) - the Army's first pentomic MP company - was on a five-day field exercise with the 7th Infantry Division, pulling guard duty and local road patrols not in the regular 7th Inf. Div.'s area, but in the battle-scarred mountains of north-central South Korea, where field exercise Northwind was held. Under the pentomic concept, platoons are dispatched for duty with the battle groups: same duties, but in now in the rugged terrain of combat training.
