Army MP patrol in Inchon, South Korea, 1958

Freighter unloading in the harbor is checked by Army MP patrol, as are barges used to bring cargo ashore. Some of the 8224th Military Police Detachment in Inchon, South Korea, have traded their Jeep in for a J boat to form the Inchon Harbor Patrol. The sea-going patrol works in eight-hour shifts around the clock, seven days a week. Everything that floats, from freighters to sampans, comes under the patrol’s watchful eye. They board incoming freighters to inspect their cargo manifest for any discrepancies, as well as visit ships already in port to check their holds for signs of pilferage. They also stop and inspect local Korean boats and advise ferries on safety regulations. The MP Harbor Patrol is directed by the provost marshal, 1st Lt. David E. Hertzog. Sgt. William Gregory is in charge of the patrol. The patrol boat and crew are furnished by the Army’s Transportation Corps.
