Billy Mills leads the pack at about 9,000 meter mark in the 10,000-meter Olympic run at National Stadium Wednesday. He went on to win the gold medal in the event by spurting past race favorite Ron Clarke (12) and Mohamed Gamoudi (615) in the final 30 meters, Mamo Wolde is the other runner in the group, Mills' triumph marked the first time the U.S. had won the long race, a distance of about 6.2 miles. U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Billy Mills beat 37 of the world's top endurance racers  for the Olympic gold medal in the 10,000 meters with an Olympic record time of 28 minutes, 24.4 seconds. Mills won a dramatic, elbow-jabbing, traffic-jam stretch run, beating out Mohammed Gamoudi of Tunesia, who got second, and world record holder and favorite Ron Clarke of Australia, who captured the bronze medal.
