First of all, if you haven't seen this by now, stop what you're doing and go read David Allen's retelling of his glorious moment in the time of peace, love and mud. And then watch the video -- you must watch the video. As it turns out, our hard-working Okinawa correspondent was not only a witness to hippie history, he was making it. You see, 40 years ago, he made his way to Woodstock with his best friend and siblings inside a beat-up Blatz beer truck. A man and his kazoo. A few bottles of wine and a documentary crew and he was stardust, man, he was golden.
Unfortunately, after that moment of levity and nostalgia, we've got to come back to the present where U.S. forces are still fighting two wars. In Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal's interim assessment of the war is being delayed until after the Aug. 20 elections there. It's expected to reveal the reality that things aren't going as well as he'd like and lay out his recommendations for moving forward. What he will say, however, is that U.S. casualties -- which hit a record high last month -- are expected to remain high for the next several months.
In Iraq, a series of bombings killed at least 48 people. As many have feared, the bombings have targeted Shiite areas in what appears to be an attempt to re-ignite the sectarian conflict that derailed progress in the country just a few years back.
In Japan, EOD troops are training for their next downrange mission. Their job at Misawa Air Base last week was to clear a range of dummy training ordnance. And they did so with a big boom. Check out the video.
