Tokyo's Washington Heights Dependent Housing Area, 1963

Children in Tokyo's Washington Heights Dependent Housing Area get in some old-fashioned snow fun as the first real snow of the winter fell in Tokyo Sunday. Throwing one of his first snowballs is Bill Mullins, 9, and building a rather dingy snow man is his brother Ronald, 4. They are the sons of T/Sgt. K.W. Mullins, 6100th Support Sq., Tachikawa AB. Tokyo's first real snow of the winter put a wet blanket of 2-3 inches on a centuries-old Japanese tradition - the "Setsubun," the day when by tradition dating back more than 1,000 years, Japan's winter gives way to spring.
