Busan, South Korea, Sept. 29, 1950: The first press run of the Korean edition of Pacific Stars and Stripes printed at the press center in Busan, South Korea is studied by various Stars and Stripes personnel.

Until then, troops fighting on the Korean peninsula were supplied with daily editions of the paper which was prepared in Tokyo and later flown to the war front. Under the new system, page mats prepared in Tokyo were flown to Busan for printing.

The Japanese press in Busan used to print the Korean edition had not been in use since 1945 and was badly in need of repair when Stripes’ Korean bureau staff located it shortly after their arrival in early August 1950. Production facilities there were further hampered by lack of mechanical material. But in less than a month, with assistance from the Tokyo office, the Korea bureau managed to ready their first press run. The printer would be used until December 15, 1952 after which printing operation for the Korean edition moved to a print plant in Seoul.
