Although the U.S. Air Force used state-of-the-art fighter planes and bombers in its efforts against the Viet Cong, badly-needed information about the situation on the ground was often best provided by Forward Air Controllers in smaller aircraft like the Bird Dog seen here gaining altitude after a low-level flight over its sector.
