Models of aircraft and boats made by SP4 Karl Breitenstein hang in the recently completed 9th Cav. craft shop. The craft shop is one of the many improvement projects the 1st Recon Squadron has built. The joke in the 1st Reconnaissance Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, is that the “recon” in the unit’s name stands for “reconstruction” instead of reconnaissance.” It’s almost true. Since last fall this frontline outfit haws built a steady stream of projects. SInce most of the work is done on the weekends and off-duty time, however, it usually takes a while for them to finish it. The craft shop is equipped with photography equipment, materials for making model boats and planes, and woodworking supplies. Apart from the hobby shop, the squadron has also built a stream-fed artificial lake, a bridge house, a theater, a new personnel building and a modernized latrine and shower house.
