Q: The commercials on AFN’s Eagle 810 radio station are sometimes baffling, but I’m even more puzzled by the recurring "Frank Stallone Friday." Who’s Frank Stallone? Why Friday? What’s up with that?

A: Frank Stallone might not be a household name, but you may have heard of his older brother, Sylvester. He’s made a few movies, I hear.

Frank himself has a long resume as an actor, singer and songwriter. (Don’t believe me? Check out his IMDb page.) But his ticket to AFN fame was his work in "Staying Alive," the sequel to "Saturday Night Fever." The soundtrack is best known for the Bee Gees’ squeaky soprano title song ("Well you can tell by the way I use my walk …"), but Stallone the Younger wrote and performed several other songs as well as acted in the John Travolta movie.

So, what does that have to do with AFN? Well, one fine day, Petty Officer 3rd Class Christian Garzone, the Eagle 810 morning disc jockey at the time, decided to play one of Stallone’s tracks, "Far From Over." It’s an utterly perfect example of a cheesy ’80s tune that peaked at Number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. (You totally want to hear it now, don’t you? Happy to help: click here.)

The song caught on, and people started calling up the studio to say how much they liked it. A friend said to Garzone, "Hey, let’s do Frank Stallone Fridays," and a catchphrase was born.

Garzone later received a MySpace message from Frank Stallone, who was gracious about the airplay and said "Thanks for keeping it alive, Ciao, Frank." Since then, every Friday, Garzone plays Gold disc #61, Track 17.
